With Wimbledon recently finished, a game of tennis may sound like an appealing option, but the thought of dressing in tennis whites may not. Wimbledon may have a reputation for being all about strawberries and cream, a glass of chilled Pimms or a cream tea, but actually playing a game of tennis may have a lot more to offer.
You don’t have to be of professional standard to strut your stuff on the court, there are currently more than 500,000 UK adults already Playing Tennis at least once a week, and with more than 23,000 tennis courts available throughout Britain’s tennis clubs, schools and parks it can be difficult to know where to start. The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) is able to give information on the nearest courts, coaches and instructors, competitions and even blogs from tennis mums and dads.
Tennis is a great sport that the whole family can take part in. Children can play mini-tennis where the courts are smaller in size, racquets shorter and the balls softer. This enables children to have longer rallies and to also have a go at different types of shots. There are even mini-tennis competitions; these are team based where children get to play in lots of short games. This is a great way for children to socialise whilst being active and getting some fresh air.
Tennis is a great form of cardiovascular fitness, especially if the thought of being stuck in the gym running on a treadmill isn’t inspiring. The varying lengths of rallies, having to be nimble and change direction on court, as well as quick bursts of activity are great for toning thighs, arms and helping to burn calories. A competitive match, against an opponent of the same level, could burn between 400-500 calories a game. Coupled with a sensible diet and perhaps some complementary exercise you could find yourself benefitting from a quick weight loss. It’s not just great for calorie burning but can help improve balance and mobility, agility and strength.
If you are looking to improve skills or technique there are plenty of coaching facilities available at most tennis clubs. These are offered at various skill levels, and are offered individually as one-to-one coaching or in a more social group environment. Tennis offers some social aspects that other sporting activities such as running or swimming many not offer, and benefits from not needing a whole team to play a game, just two people for a singles game and four people for a doubles game.
Tennis is not just good for the body but is also great for the mind. The sport requires a high level of alertness and tactical thinking as there is a need to anticipate your opponent’s next movements.
