Hamilton defeats Fairfield in Region Final...Hamilton is Ashland bound:  Journal News

DAYTON — The ball may not have landed in Ashland, but the team certainly did.

Hamilton High sophomore Rachel LeMaster crushed a long, two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning Saturday to lift Big Blue to a 2-0 win against Greater Miami Conference rival Fairfield in the Division I regional championship game before an overflow crowd of 400 at the University of Dayton softball field.

The victory advances Hamilton (24-6) to the state tournament in Ashland for third time in six years, where Big Blue will play at 3 p.m. Thursday against the winner of today’s Elyria-Whitehouse Anthony Wayne game.

“I knew it was gone because it came off the bat really nice,” LeMaster said of her third home run of the year, which landed behind the bleachers beyond the left-field fence. “I was so excited rounding the bases until I got home and (my teammates) about killed me.”

The jubilation on one side of the field was mirrored by devastation on the other as Fairfield (23-5) lost in the regional final on a last-inning home run for the second year in a row. For seven innings, the game played out as most had expected with Hamilton’s Jennifer McKee and Fairfield’s Mindy Breitholle mowing down batter after batter.

McKee (23-6) struck out 16 and was perfect through four innings until Lindsay Traxler led off the fifth with a solid single to center. Jen Treglia added a one-out single in the sixth, but that was it as McKee finished off the two-hit shutout by fanning six of the final seven batters she faced.

“After (LeMaster) hit that home run, I was just concentrating on finishing strong and getting the job done,” said McKee. Hamilton freshman and No. 9 batter Katie Fuller got Big Blue going in the top of the eighth with a one-out single to left-center, and two pitches later LeMaster ripped her second huge home run in the last three games.

“I have to credit coach (Steve) Heckman for this one because right before I went to bat he reminded me to keep my hands high because I’ve had a problem with dropping them,” said LeMaster, who also hit a dramatic, game-tying home run in the bottom of the sixth in last weekend’s district final, which Hamilton went on to win in eight.

Add in HHS’ two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to beat Lakota East on Friday, and Big Blue have won their last three games in their final at-bat.

“It’s fun,” Heckman said. “I’d prefer it the other way, but who am I to argue? It’s been a great ride. “Fairfield’s a great team, and I’m just really proud of our conference,” Heckman continued. “We have two in the final four and three in the final eight. And Lakota East was right there, too, so four teams made it to the regional. We played good competition all year long, and now’s the payoff time.

“I’m so happy for these girls to get that experience to go up to state. The last time we were there was 2002, and these seniors were in eighth grade then. So it’s just so awesome for them to get this experience.”

Unbeaten Hamilton gives West first loss                    Journal News

By Steven Matthews
LeMaster, McKee lead Big Blue to 8-inning victory

WEST CHESTER TOWNSHIP — Lakota West High softball coach Keith Castner hopes Tuesday’s extra-inning loss to Hamilton is just a bump in the road for his squad. After shooting out of the gate 5-0, the host Firebirds were humbled against the Big Blue  2-0 in eight innings thanks to freshman Rachel LeMaster’s two-run single off Lindsay Bodeker in the extra frame. LeMaster slapped a 2-0 pitch down the right-field line to drive in Ali Mahon and Susan Wendland. West had the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Jennifer McKee struck out Adrienne Found to secure the victory for the Big Blue (5-0 overall, 4-0 Greater Miami Conference).

Despite the loss, which dropped the Firebirds to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the GMC, they continue to ride the hot arm of Bodeker, who struck out 17 batters for the second straight game, again tying the school record.  “Bodeker is as advertised, and we couldn’t solve her early,” Hamilton coach Steve Heckman said. “She was mixing it up awfully well, and it made it tough for us to figure it out. We got a little bit more patient at the end and made a couple pitches come our way, and we paid off on it.

While Bodeker (3-1) was mowing through the Big Blue lineup, the Firebirds created scoring chances in the second, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.  Hamilton produced only three hits over the first seven innings. Two of the three hits off Bodeker came from Rachel LeMaster.

In the eighth, Traci Ryder led off with a walk, and after Mahon entered as a pinch runner, Wendland laid down a sacrifice bunt that Bodeker threw over the head of Found, putting runners on second and third. LeMaster then delivered the game-winning blow.  “I just swung the bat and I hit it. I was very excited.”  LeMaster said. West was able to fill the bases in the eighth inning after Hamilton committed two errors, but McKee, sealed the win. “They’ve got a good ball club. Coach Heckman does a great job with them,” Castner said. “The girls play hard for him, and they’re a very scrappy bunch of girls. They got it done.”

Letter of Recommendation from Coach Joe Abraham

It is my pleasure to recommend Rachel LeMaster.  I have known and coached Rachel for four years. Rachel plays for the travel team I coach, the Buckeye Heat. I have learned that in addition to being an excellent player, Rachel possesses the drive and the competitiveness necessary to be successful at the college level. Although it is close, I think Rachel is the best overall college prospect on our team.

It is hard to list all of Rachel’s attributes on the field.  She possesses every tool; speed, power, arm, bat, glove, instincts.  Rachel catches, plays shortstop whenever our regular shortstop is out, and also plays center, first and second base.  She bats second in our order, and is really more of a #3 hitter, but we want to maximize her number of at-bats.  Rachel can be counted upon to hit as well against the best pitchers as the average pitchers and performs excellent in clutch situations..  Even though she was our #2 hitter, we almost never had her sac bunt, as her bat was too strong to sacrifice.  Rachel hits for average and power and is an excellent stolen-base threat.  Defensively, she is strong at every position.  In short, she is a great athlete.

As good of a player as Rachel is, the enthusiasm and attitude she brings to a team might be her best quality. Rachel has fun playing softball. Come to think of it, Rachel has fun, period. Sometimes we talk about kids burning out on a sport. Rachel would not be included in that conversation. Out of about 300 girls I've coached in travel and high school ball, none enjoy the game more than Rachel. She has fun not only with her teammates, but also her coaches, the umpires, even the opposing team. Her playfulness on the field could be mistaken for a lack of intensity, when in fact Rachel is as competitive as anyone on our team.

In closing, I highly recommend Rachel to you and your program. If I can be of further assistance regarding Rachel, please do not hesitate to contact me.

      Sincerely,

     Joe Abraham
